Just What Every Mom Wants: A Pink Bat

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there.

Baseball’s pink bat tradition to benefit breast cancer research in honor of Mother’s Day has been going on for a few years now. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. But at the risk of getting flamed, I feel compelled to point out there’s something a tad bit odd about this ad.

No, there’s nothing wrong with the color pink—this isn’t a “macho” hang-up. And this isn’t meant to “dis” the good work that the Susan G. Komen foundation does for breast cancer or the charitable efforts of Major League Baseball. It’s just an observation that the combined elements of the ad execution lend themselves to, shall we say, different interpretations. Uh, maybe the less said about this the better.

And at the risk of sounding overly suggestive, you even can pick one up at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Give your mom a hug instead of a bat. You might even consider skipping the middleman (or shortstop) and just give the $79.99 straight to the Susan G. Komen foundation.

  1. Oh, c’mon, Mitch! Every husband or boyfriend wants to give his beloved a pink bat with which she can “right-size” his thinking (and noggin) when he inevitably starts being too male. It’s a much quicker solution than getting the silent treatment for a week…

  2. Bill Hall (then of the Milwaukee Brewers) hit a walk-off home run with his pink bat in 2006 and continued using it until it broke. I think that’s really cool.

    • BS, thanks for chiming in. That IS cool.

I just think the creative team could’ve used a less suggestive image than the bat cozy (or whatever you call those things) to go with the “tickle her pink” line. Now excuse me while I try to get my mind back out of the gutter…
